Missing Billing Address in Instructing Party Contact Details Section
Overview
When creating a CMI (Client/Matter Inception) Request in Intapp Intake, you may encounter an error if the Instructing Party is missing a Billing Address. This prevents the Request from progressing and stops the system from creating the required Party in the PMS (e.g., 3E).
This article explains the cause of the issue and how to resolve it.
What Is the Issue?
If no Billing Address is entered, the CMI Request will fail because Intapp cannot create the Instructing Party record without a valid address in the downstream system.
This causes the Request to error when attempting to move past the initial stages of the workflow.
Why It Happens
The Instructing Party must have a complete contact record before it can be pushed into the practice management system. A Billing Address is a required field for creation and validation. Without it, the data push cannot proceed, and the workflow stops.
How to Fix the Issue
To resolve the error, ensure a Billing Address is entered in the Instructing Party Contact Details section. This can be done in one of two workflow steps:
Option 1 — Enter Client & Matter Details
Add the Billing Address during the standard data-entry step at the beginning of the CMI workflow.
Option 2 — Approve Intake Initiation
If the Request has moved forward, the Billing Address can still be added at the Approve Intake Initiation stage.
Important:
At the Approve Intake Initiation state, only the Fee Earner (FE) or Matter Partner (MP) has the authority to enter or correct the Billing Address.
This must be completed before the CMI Request is submitted further.
After adding the Billing Address, resubmit the Request and it should progress normally.
Best Practices
- Always confirm that the Instructing Party includes a full Billing Address before submitting.
- Consider adding a validation or mandatory field rule in Intake Configuration to prevent the issue from recurring.
- If Workflow Roles are used, ensure Fee Earners and Matter Partners understand their responsibility to verify contact details at the approval stage.
